Something PersonalAN AFTERNOON WITH MY LOVEBabylonstoren, Paarl

Writing this post was so special for me, because for the first time ever on my website I’m posting something truly personal. Roelandi and my engagement story and photos!

Roelandi and I met through our church (best place ever!), we became good friends and after a few months eventually started dating (all our friends sort of saw it coming but the two of us had no clue). We dated, did things together, got to know each other more and more and more and more…

In September I started planning our engagement. I’ve been part of so many couples stories and heard so many proposal ideas, but I wanted something true to us and something special for Roelandi! And so the planning started. I asked Roelandi’s parents permission to marry their daughter and when I received their blessing I went on and started thinking about what Roelandi and I enjoy doing.

Roelandi grew up in Tanzania (wild at heart) and I grew up on a game farm in Limpopo. So we both have a love for the bush! I started thinking “how can I incorporate this into our engagement?” Eventually, my mom helped me plan out an awesome engagement, an evening filled with our favourite food and a beautiful table setting in the bush.

The photos below are our official engagement photos we did with our amazing photographer for our wedding, Nadine Aucamp. The smiles we have on these photos are all because of this wonderful lady, there wasn’t a moment where we felt uncomfortable in front of her camera. You have a special talent Nadine, we cannot wait for you to be part of our wedding!

Keep scrolling down to read a bit more about our actual engagement. I think we have quite a unique story ;)

PS. You’re never seeing this many photos of me again :D Hahaha!!

If you’re wondering where Roelandi’s ring is in all the photos, it unfortunately had to be sent away for a service the day before our couple shoot :(

A few of our (actual) engagement photos.

I took these photos (one with self-timer) right after I asked Roelandi to marry me. My parents did this whole setup for us on their farm, it looked like something out of a book!

What the photos doesn’t tell is the fact that my dad was really sick the day before our arrival in Limpopo and my mom had to rush him to the hospital (the closest trusted hospital is a four hour drive by the way, they live in the middle of nowhere). When we arrived in Johannesburg, we went to visit him in the hospital. He had already been released by the doctors and my parents were on their way home. Now I had to give them enough time to go do this entire setup. I wasted time in stores, went to eat cake with Roelandi, stopped in every little town on our drive home and also stopped by my great-gran for a few hours to visit.

Eventually when we arrived on the farm my parents quickly went to the camp site to quickly pick out the food and make sure everything is alright. My mom faked a phone call from people in their camp saying the electricity went out and asked me to quickly go put it back on. When Roelandi and I arrived at the camp my heart was pounding out of my chest, I didn’t know what to expect!

I got out of the bakkie and flicked the switch, a HUGE tree with lanterns went on and I went down on my knee and told Roelandi how much I love her then asked her to marry me. We both started crying, we hugged each other for a few minutes before I had the chance to put the ring on her finger.

My mom made all our favourite foods, but we were too excited to eat :) After we settled down, we packed up all the food and decor and went home to enjoy the evening with my parents.

That same evening we decided to only tell our closest family and friends, we thought it’s such a personal moment and putting it on Facebook the same evening will take away from the moment. It was so much fun sharing our joy with our nearest and dearest, we phoned each one individually and the news started making it’s rounds. After a day or so, we decided to also put our engagement on Facebook and so many people shared in our joy. Thank you so much to all our family and friends for every phone call, message, like and comment :) We love and cherish you all deeply, we’re blessed with great people that share in our lives! We’re looking forward to starting our new journey together, I’m spending it with my absolute best friend.
